Dissolution does not affect grass phytolith assemblages

چکیده

Dissolution is one among several taphonomical processes that may bias paleoenvironmental, paleoclimatic or taxonomic interpretation of phytolith assemblages. To improve our understanding dissolution on grass phytoliths, we studied systematic changes surface features, morphotype assemblages, and rates phytoliths extracted from two species Hyparrhenia involucrata (Panicoideae), Nastus borbonicus (Bambusoideae), soil La Réunion Island (approximate mean age < 800 yr), three paleosols Ethiopia 4.4 million years). We used heavy-liquid to extract 1% Na2CO3 perform partial experiments. Physicochemical properties, morphotypes, assemblages were analyzed using optical scanning electron microscopy, laser diffraction, X-ray diffractometry. Our results show 1) different have rates: the leaves (Panicoideae) are more prone than those (Bambusoideae). 2) Silicon (Si) released by (i.e., rate) decreases as follows: plant > paleosol. 3) leads cavity formation surfaces disappearance fragile silica particles. 4) Partial does not significantly change percentages common morphotypes in a given assemblage. These provide benchmark for assessing reliability paleoenvironmental reconstructions buried soils sediments.

Teosinte Inflorescence Phytolith Assemblages Mirror Zea Taxonomy

Molecular DNA analyses of the New World grass (Poaceae) genus Zea, comprising five species, has resolved taxonomic issues including the most likely teosinte progenitor (Zea mays ssp. parviglumis) of maize (Zea mays ssp. mays). However, archaeologically, little is known about the use of teosinte by humans both prior to and after the domestication of maize. One potential line of evidence to explo...

Acute stress does not affect the impairing effect of chronic stress on memory retrieval

Objective(s): Due to the prevalence and pervasiveness of stress in modern life and exposure to both chronic and acute stresses, it is not clear whether prior exposure to chronic stress can influence the impairing effects of acute stress on memory retrieval. This issue was tested in this study. Materials and Methods: Adult male Wistar rats were randomly assigned to the following groups: control,...

Color Language Does Not Affect Chromatic Thresholds

Speakers of languages that differ in their color vocabulary perform differently on a range of supra-threshold categorization tasks and these variations are predicted by their respective color vocabulary. Here we compare two language groups (English and Herero) who have different color vocabularies for the green-blue region of color space. Discrimination thresholds were compared for English and ...

Erythromycin does not directly affect neutrophil functions.

To determine whether erythromycin could affect neutrophil functions, we measured N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (FMLP)-induced chemotaxis and superoxide generation of neutrophils in the presence of erythromycin at various concentrations. Erythromycin had no effect on either of them. We further confirmed that intracellular free calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) was not influenced by FMLP ...

Absence of Dystrophin Does Not Affect Myogenesis

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is caused by the absence of the protein dystrophin in the muscle cells. The function of dystrophin is still not clear. For enabling study of the molecular function of dystrophin, we used small inhibitory RNA (siRNA) for suppressing the expression of the protein in two muscle cell lines and achieved a quantitative knockdown. We applied two-dimensional differenti...
